You don’t see a lot of crafts in high school hallways.
But let’s be honest—by mid-November, everyone’s ready for a change of pace (including us).
I created this turkey-themed math activity for my high school students as a way to:
- Keep them engaged when focus is low
- Review key concepts before break
- And yes, make my classroom a little less “bare wall syndrome” and a little more festive
The best part?
It’s still 100% academic—and your students will actually enjoy doing it.

Seasonal burnout is real (for everyone!)
Between end-of-quarter grading, days off for voting/holidays/work days (hello, no school November!) shortened periods, and half the class leaving early for break, teaching the week before Thanksgiving can feel… pointless. 😅
But giving up and tossing on a movie doesn’t sit right either—especially in a tested subject.
You want:
- Something curriculum-aligned
- Something creative
- Something that keeps even your too-cool juniors from scrolling under their desk
And ideally?
Something that doesn’t require hours of prep on your part.
Enter: math turkeys
This isn’t your average elementary-school craft.

It’s a standards-based math activity disguised as a festive turkey that students actually want to finish.
Here’s how it works:
- 🦃 Students choose their feathers for their turkeys (ex: solving equations, simplifying expressions, or whatever concept you’re reviewing)
- 🎯 Each feather has a question on it that students have to answer
- ✂️ Once all the feathers are complete, they assemble their turkey
- 🖼️ You get a colorful, student-created display that’s way better than blank walls and definitely better than another worksheet
And yes—they still take it seriously. Because they know the math counts, and the creative piece is just a bonus.

what makes it perfect for secondary:
✅ Designed for middle & high school attention spans (no fluff or clipart overload)
✅ Works with multiple grade levels and math topics
✅ Quiet classroom management win: you’ll hear pencils moving and scissors snipping instead of “Are we doing anything today?”
✅ Instant classroom (or hallway) decor without you staying late to make it look good
I mean look at the creativity I got from these students!

Plus, you can differentiate it:
- Assign different numbers of feathers to different groups
- Let fast finishers design their own feathers
- Use as review before a quiz or as a post-test cooldown
